Insight Meditation Instruction:

Insight meditation is a practice that will help you develop self-awareness and a certain type of mental sensitivity that leads to a deeper understanding of yourself, the world around you, and the other people in it.  This type of meditation focuses on what's happening right now in the present moment and will help you learn to see things as they really are.  Through non-clinging and non-judgmental awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and physical bodily sensations, you'll eventually come to realize that these things are changing, ultimately unsatisfactory, and not you.  This will lead to a stronger balance of the mind and you'll eventually come to realize the truth of who you are at the deepest level.

During insight meditation, you'll typically sit in a quiet place with minimal distractions and observe your thoughts, feelings, and physical bodily sensations objectively, without judgment, from moment to moment.  Doing this repeatedly will lead to a calm, collectedness of mind and you'll begin to see the patterns in your thoughts and feelings and gain a greater sense of clarity and insight into your true nature.

If you’re a beginner, in this session I will give you basic instructions on how to practice a body-scan meditation technique where you continuously direct your awareness throughout your entire body and objectively notice all of the different types of sensations you’re experiencing from moment to moment.  This will lead you to realize that every single moment, you’re experiencing some type of sensation and that their true nature is to arise and pass away, completely on their own, without your doing.  This will allow the truth of impermanence to reveal itself to you and eventually bring you out of the habit pattern of identifying and blindly reacting to these sensations that cause you lots of suffering.

If you’ve had experience with this technique before, but are stuck in your practice or haven’t been consistent enough to notice any tangible benefits, in this session I will do my best to help you overcome any obstacles you might be having and hopefully reconnect you with the efficacy of this technique.  Or if need be, tailor a specific type of instruction for you based on where you are in your practice.

There are many benefits to practicing insight meditation, including reduced stress, improved emotional regulation, and increased self-awareness.  It can also enhance your ability to listen, empathize, and connect with others.  However, please understand that this isn't the final goal of this type of meditation.  The ultimate goal is to awaken to the truth of no-self and finally see through the illusion and delusion of this world.  I understand that this might not be desirable or even make sense to some people but it’s extremely important to consent to this before taking up an insight meditation practice because this is what it will inevitably lead to.
